Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a government overthrow in September and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
