Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
