An Forecasting Platform Trader Profited $Nearly Half a Million from Bets on Venezuela's Political Shift.
An individual profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was publicly declared, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of American actions.
Sudden Shift in Forecasts
Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the leader would be out of power by the month's conclusion rose in the period preceding President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that the president had been apprehended.
A single trader, which registered on the site in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.
It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Probability Spikes Before Public Statement
Market statistics shows that users put the odds of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.
However these probabilities had increased to 11% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of Saturday, indicating a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the public announcement was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on inside information," said a financial reform advocate.
Several of other individuals also earned large payouts from similar wagers.
Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges
Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.
A new rule introduced on recently seeks to ban government employees from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.
Industry Context
Prediction markets have surged in popularity in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from sports to political events.
The industry were examined under the last presidential term. But it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.
Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.
A company executive for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
